2025 Year in Travel! I ended up on 6 international trips this year: 2 with my mom, 2 with my friend, and 2 solo! I hit my all time record for flight miles, just shy of 100k for the year! And somehow I still technically worked full time hours at my job 🤷‍♀️ So very very thankful. It was all so much fun, and I look forward to more exploration in the new year!

Ultramarathon on continent #6 is complete! I had quite the adventure running the HK50 in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago! Hong Kong is such a pretty place, and this race really showcases the beauty of both city and nature.

I was nervous before this race because I felt like I had a lot stacked against me- my legs were achy from a week of walking 12-20k steps a day while touring around, my old calf injuries started to bother me a bit while just walking, and I felt undertrained and intimidated by the impending heat. So I went to God in prayer, knowing that He has always carried me through these races, even when I’ve been up against difficulties. I chose to give up my worrying and instead remember who He is and His power and provision.

The race went very well, despite challenging terrain in the second half (and STAIRS!). Despite rolling my ankle a few times, a little fall, and some precarious trails, I was never hurt. And I had a moment mid-race when I just became overwhelmed with gratitude for God: here I was adventuring in a new country, doing the things I love to do, and with a friend I’ve known my whole life. I am so, so lucky. And thankful.

If you’re looking for a spectacular Fall hike, you’ve got to check out the Theth-Valbone hike in Albania! We did it in October, and the leaves were at their peak! This was the highlight of my trip to the Balkans. From the epic mountain views, to traipsing in the yellow forest of my dreams, to the adorable mountain guest house we stayed in afterwards, it was all a WOW.

It is a challenging, but very doable hike. It requires some planning and logistics, because you start and end in different towns. But it is totally worth it!

After my race in Anglesea, Australia, I flew to Sydney for a whirlwind reminiscing tour of one of my favorite cities! A looooong time ago I did a semester in Sydney during my last year of college. I picked Australia because it was the farthest away I could go. This was my first introduction to public health and health disparities- we did nursing clinicals in Aboriginal Medical Clinics, and it was very eye opening. I don’t think I realized that the time how foundational this would be to my future interests in nursing and humanitarian work.

I also didn’t realize how living in a backpacker hostel for 3 months would be so foundational to my future interests in in travel 😂 I still love hostels and don’t think I’m about to grow out of that any time soon. Thankfully hostels give you more than 1 hour of internet access a day now (yes, for real, we only got 1 hour/day!) Of course I stayed in one in Sydney - the @yha_sydneyharbour and it had killer rooftop views overlooking the harbor!

It filled my heart with so much joy to be back in a place that impacted me so much when I was younger! I never thought I’d end up there again, but I love when things work out!

This month I checked another ultramarathon on another continent off my list- Australia! I ran the Surf Coast Century 50k in Anglesea, which is in the Great Ocean Road region! It was a great race! Québec City, Quebec. During our Montreal trip, we took a day trip here for my Mom’s birthday, and I loooved this city! We took the first train out and last train back (3.5hrs each way), and it gave us plenty of time to explore. So cute. So European. Loved hearing French. Couldn’t stop taking photos!

However, I would not recommend visiting in August, because it was soooo crowded. Tons of tour buses bringing people in, long lines to get into restaurants. I would imagine that it is peak season for tourism, and that there are better times to visit. I think fall would be magical here!

Another ultra on another continent ✅ Ran the Maverick Peaks Merlin Ultra 55k in England in June! Took a quick solo trip to the Peak District and had a blast! The race course was so green and diverse. Hills, forests, countryside, the Chatsworth house, and SHEEP! Also the most impressive bakery stand at the start line 😍 I loved this very British experience and cool summer weather, despite jet lag preventing me from getting more than 4 hours of sleep the night before 😬 More details in my race report in the blog! Patagonia: the magic of Torres Del Paine, Chile!

We took a full day tour of Torres Del Paine from Puerto Natales. Usually I’d rather hike to see the sights, but considering I had a race coming up, we opted for the tour. And it was fantastic! It was very efficient for seeing all of these magnificent vistas, and we had an amazing tour guide. We also got crazy lucky with the weather- full sun, no wind! It was a bit chilly though.
Pro tip: you can cold soak a Cup o’ Noodles anytime, anywhere… perfect for those all-day trips & journeys where you have to BYO lunch and don’t have a way to heat/chill your food!

What an incredible sight- the Perrito Moreno Glacier in Argentina! Located right outside of the town of El Calafate, this place just blew my mind! All the superlatives. Nature is amazing! When you visit, there are a number of walking paths crisscrossing in front of the glacier, so you get to see it at a bunch of different angles (my apologies for so many photos- each time you rounded the corner, it was another WOW!)
You can also take a boat ride to get closer, but I’m not sure it was worth the money or the time taken away from walking the balconies, so we skipped it (with no regrets). We were lucky to witness a ton of ice calving (video), which was so cool!

We were based in Puerto Natales, Chile for our time in Patagonia. This was a very worthy side quest, despite the long travel time (about 6 hours each way). Don’t miss this if you go to Patagonia!

P.S.- if you fly to Puerto Natales from Santiago, make sure you sit on the left side of the plane for these killer glacier (& Mt. Fitz Roy) views!

I recently ran the Patagonia Running Festival 50k ultramarathon in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile! I can’t get over what an incredible day it was- I got to run past giant mountains and turquoise lakes, take in the sights and smells of autumn, and watch snow fall on the mountains (while the rain fell on me)! It felt like such an incredible privilege to be there and get to do what I love. But all of that glory goes to God.

This race wasn’t amazing because of my diligent training or talent as a runner- it was about experiencing God and his power to heal and the beauty of His creation.

About ten days before the race I got a new injury, while on a run. I did what I could with massage, strengthening, etc, but it would not go away. The pain was sharp when I ran, and got so bad that at times that it would even hurt to walk. I was extremely nervous and had a feeling of doom and disappointment about the race. But I had this nagging feeling that only prayer and God’s grace could help me through the race. I imagined that I would be in excruciating pain and just grinding through, and I was not sure that I’d make it, even halfway. But the day before the race I decided that I would just have to trust that God would provide for me in this situation.

Well, not only did I finish the race- but I had NO pain! That injury did not flare up at all! I even set a new 50k PR! I was able to run pain-free and bask in the beauty of all He has created, while overflowing with gratitude to God! I was in awe of God just as much as I was in awe with the scenery.

This situation really reminded me of a few things:
1: I’m not in control. No matter how hard I try to make things work for myself, *I* can’t. God is in control, and He listens to our prayers.

2: Running is a gift from God. I used to hate running, yet now it is one of my passions. But the gift is not guaranteed for life. So I am incredibly thankful for the time that I have with it, how it has changed me, and the adventures it keeps leading me on!

Just had the most epic race experience at the @patagoniarunfest ! There was jaw-dropping scenery in Torres Del Paine National Park from start to finish. From the pink glow of sunrise around the mountains, to the turquoise lakes, to the autumn leaves changing- it was magical. Yessss it also rained for a few hours, but thankfully I had the right gear and it also made snow fall in the mountains surrounding us 😁 The race was so well organized, race kit fantastic, and a super fun post-race party! This race should definitely be on your bucket list. I ran the 50k and my friend ran the 11k as her very first race! Much more to post about this later!.

I was reflecting back on last year at this time- I had just run the epic Ultra-Trail Drakensberg 65km trail race in South Africa! This was a tough one, about 40 miles and 7,000 feet of elevation gain. But I don’t know the exact stats, because my watch died at the same time I got lost and it got dark outside. The course marking ribbons kept going along the road too far, but eventually some other runners and I found our way back on course after looking at the GPX file. I regretted not bringing my trekking poles (I never want to check a suitcase!) and there were many moments in which I asked myself “why did I pick a race this hard? You don’t have to do that.” My legs seized up a few times when I was alone in the hills and I wondered how in the world I would get out of there if they just shut down completely. But I was thankful to not have any encounters with snakes or baboons, and to see my friend who was volunteering at an aid station in the second half! So thankful to God for giving me the strength and perseverance to make it through these hard challenges, and for the way running has changed my life!

I’m currently on a quest to run a marathon (hopefully ultra) on every continent!

The race-cation to South Africa ended up being the catalyst for a 5 country whirlwind Africa trip. Sometimes you just need a reason to get out the door! I did write a blog post about it if you want more details about this race… which I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a challenge!

Took my mom to hike Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala! Pacaya is one 3 active volcanoes in Guatemala and by far the easiest one to hike. Per my Garmin, it was 3.6 miles round trip with 1,200ft of elevation gain. Pacaya is quite a stunner to look at- and so are the lava fields you get to walk on. The hike is short and steep, but an enjoyable leg-burner 😆 And then at the top, you can roast marshmallows over steam vents in the lava fields! It is an awesome half-day trip from Antigua- read more and get details on the blog!

2024 was a wild adventure! I started off the year with no plans and no major goals. Well… I ended up visiting 15 countries on 3 continents, and setting a new personal record of flying over 80,000 miles! All while employed in a non-travel related job 😀 From New Zealand, to some of Southern Africa, to the Balkans, I ran and drank coffee through some incredible places. Most of them on very short notice 😆

My domestic adventures were also spectacular- some incredible hiking and backpacking trips in the Sierras had me in AWE of God and His creation!

Not all of this year was a highlight reel, but God’s hand and provision was so evident, even during the times of loss.

All I can say is that in this next year, hold space for God. Leave some wiggle room in your plans for God to present an opportunity, or for Him to come alongside you on a last-minute adventure. His plans and His presence are wonderful!

The quest for the ultimate pastry! I saw these epic cream-filled beignets from @fortitudebakehouse in London on the internet a few months ago, and have been drooling over them ever since. I HAD TO HAVE ONE. I have been determined to find a way to London to try them! Finally I was able to arrange a layover in London that coincided with the bakery’s hours, and the mission was ON!

The beauty of Victoria Falls! We only had 24 hours to see this wonder of the world, so we maximized the little time we had! After landing in the Victoria Falls airport and checking into the hotel, we walked over to the Zambia side of the falls. Our timing was PERFECT for rainbows! Then we walked back across the bridge into Zimbabwe where our hotel was.

The next morning we woke up and went to the Zimbabwe side of the falls. Our timing was not so perfect, and a lot of our view was obscured by the way the light hit the mist (a whiteout) 😢 It was crazy how LOUD the falls were, yet not be able to see them! Thankfully we did get to catch some glimpses after hanging around the park for a while. And honestly, the park itself was so beautiful and green, it was lovely to walk around!

On our walk back to the hotel, we saw wild elephants grazing in the trees across the street from us! 🐘

Planning a trip to Victoria Falls? A few things you should know:

1. It goes through 2 countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia! It is totally possible to walk between both sides in the same day, just keep in mind that both sides require a visa (easy process) and have their own parks and separate entrance fees

2. You will get wet! Plan accordingly with your clothing, bags, and footwear. You may be able to rent a poncho in the park, but if you can bring your own from home, even better!

3. Cash is king. Getting into the parks, country, and around town is best done with cash. People in front of us in line at the park in Zambia tried to use card and it was a long, slow hassle. Our visas also had to be paid for in cash. Zimbabwe uses USD, but parks on both sides of Victoria Falls will also accept South African rand- though you are likely to get a bad exchange rate! Some restaurants do take credit cards though. We also heard that ATMs often run out of money, but we didn’t have to use one and find out.

We also found that Ponsonby Central is the coolest place to get food in Auckland- it’s a food hall with tons of unique mini restaurants of all flavors. and a killer ambience!

Waiheke Island is short ferry ride from downtown Auckland, and WOW! It is spectacular! The water is so blue and clear, I thought I was in the Virgin Islands! Waiheke Island is known for its wine, and I highly recommend a day trip to this magical place!

I had a BLAST running the @taraweraultratrail 50k ultramarathon! The race was GORGEOUS, well-organized, and super friendly! What could be better than running in a fern jungle or a forest without snakes or bears? I love destination races- a perfect excuse for a #runcation ! I highly recommend the Tarawera Ultra-Trail- it has race distances from 21km-162km, so everyone can find a distance that works for them. It certainly lives to its slogan of #trailsfullofheart !

Words can barely describe the experience which that hiking part of the John Muir Trail. Ten days in the wilderness, being fully self-reliant, overcoming countless challenges, and experiencing mind-blowing natural landscapes. Part of me can’t believe it was all real. There were plenty of ups and downs, and my faith was both challenged and encouraged during the hike. I realized that a daily reliance on God was not optional- was the most critical component to persevering both physically and mentally. In times of apprehension, or exhaustion, or decision making, being in conversation with God and remembering who He is were crucial for me on this hike!

JMT Day 10: Bishop Pass to South Lake
Bishop Pass was the trail we used to exit the JMT. It was no joke, with 3,000+ feet of gain in the first 6 miles! The trail was really beautiful and well maintained, for the most part. We had one dangerous river crossing on this section and also had to run across a broken bridge that was across a cliff waterfall. The top of Bishop Pass (11,972ft) felt like being on the moon, and coming down felt like entering into another world (civilization!). South Lake was stunning in itself and reminded me of a fairy tale (see last photo).

Our adventure ended with hitchhiking into Bishop for another glorious round of showers and milkshakes!

JMT Day 9: Today had the most jaw-dropping scenery of the whole hike! We meandered up from Evolution Lakes to a completely frozen Wanda Lake, and then up Muir Pass (11,970 feet). I had so many “I can’t believe where I am and what I’m doing right now” moments throughout the day. Just WOW. We spent at least 3 hours on snow, and coming down Muir Pass was definitely more fun since the snow had become soft and we could “ski” a little bit. We also passed Helen lake, completely frozen. I felt like we were in a completely different universe out there!

JMT Days 7 & 8: We started at Marie Lakes campsite and headed up to Seldon Pass first thing in the morning. Although it was short, it was very steep and icy. Despite wearing microspikes, I slipped and fell down part of it. Totally uninjured, but it was a good reminder that even “easy” sections can be dangerous if covered in ice. Later in the day, we made it to our resupply at Muir Trail Ranch. It was an exhausting day, and the reality of carrying the weight of my resupplied pack outshined the excitement of new food. But we entered into Kings Canyon National Park, for the night, which was beautiful!

Day 8: Today we crossed Evolution Creek, another notorious crossing, which was wider and faster than it looked- an icy cold thigh-high jolt of energy. And then there was a LOT of uphill. We made it to Evolution Lake for camp, another one of the most beautiful sites we encountered- I just love those high alpine lakes surrounded by mountains! We were treated to an incredible alpenglow against the surrounding mountains at sunset.

PS- in photo #4, I really thought this looked like a horse impaled into the tree. Anyone else see this? 😆

I never would have predicted my 2023 to look like this!
In 2022, I spent 4 months abroad, and was hoping to keep that momentum going. But while I began this year finishing up a trip to Uganda, a solo weekend in Mexico City ended up being my only other international trip. BUT- it was the ultimate year of outdoor adventures!

I started backpacking (the JMT!), spent 14 nights camping, climbed a 15,000ft mountain in Mexico, snowshoed (in San Diego!), visited 4 National parks, and ran a 50k ultramarathon!

God is so good! Maybe sometimes it’s better to go into a new year without too many plans, because then you’re flexible to whatever doors He opens for you. I am so happy when I am out in nature exploring, and I am so thankful that I had many chances to do that this year. So often I miss out on the great places around me because I’m always jumping at a chance to use my passport. Definitely going to keep my mind open for whatever gets thrown my way in 2024!

John Muir Trail Day 6: VVR to Marie Lake
We took a truck to the Bear Ridge trailhead, and suffered through a bruta 5 mile uphill section to reconnect with the JMT. My pack was killing my shoulders, despite the fact that we were only a day away from resupply. Crossing Bear Creek proved to be as notorious as its reputation implied- the water was thigh high and swift. It took serious focus on planting our poles and feet and resisting the current to make it across, and we realized afterwards that maybe it wasn’t the best idea. But we made it to Marie Lake for the evening- probably my favorite campsite of the trail!

JMT Day 5: Fish Creek to VVR: Today’s mission: Get to Vermilion Valley Resort, where a hot shower, hot meal, and a bed awaited us for the night! Our first challenge was Silver Pass (10,778ft), which was filled with frozen lakes, a bunch of snowfields, and one very steep snow face that had glissade tracks on it. We also had a couple of challenging creek crossings: one with waterfalls, and another one that was deep and fast moving, but we couldn’t find the alternate route and just braved the short section. We made it to the ferry landing with some time to spare. The ferry ride across Lake Edison was beautiful! VVR was so welcoming and homey and comfortable- and the food amazing! If you ever hike the JMT, do not skip a night at VVR!

John Muir Trail Day 3: Shadow Creek to Red Cones

This day we hiked about 13 miles. Minaret Creek was our highest creek crossing today, a bit above knee level and moving at a moderate pace. The area around Mammoth was quite challenging due to large patches of giant fallen trees that we had to climb over. At just the right moment, we arrived at Red’s Meadow resort ! Lunch at Red’s was glorious! Milkshake, veggie burger, fruit- worth every penny! The final section from Red’s to our campsite was a hot, exposed, uphill slog for a few miles, but we found a beautiful spot in the woods for the night.

Encountered a few tricky spots, most notably a “high consequence” snow field at Garnet Lake that almost caused us to turn around. But we made some friends who helped us cross safely! We made it to Shadow Creek to camp for the night, and had our first taste of the tenacious Sierra mosquito situation.

Hiked around 15 miles, starting with picking up our permits at a Yosemite ranger station, walking through the mostly flat Toulumne Meadows, then heading up and over Donahue Pass (11,073ft). Marveled at seeing the snow capped mountains and snowy passes for the first time. Camped on the other side of Donahue Pass at 10,200 ft elevation.

First solo car camping trip! My plans for a quick international trip fell through at the last minute, so I finally did the thing I’ve been wanting to do for a year! The sleep setup in my car was pretty comfy and I could hear the ocean at night. A beautiful sunset, fun times playing with my backpacking stove (I need practice!), a lovely beach run in the morning, and a stop to see the Carlsbad Flower Fields on the way home- a perfect little getaway close to home.

One thing that had been on my Coban bucket list was going to Chicoj Coffee Cooperative for a tour. After quite the ordeal (see stories), I made it here and ended up with a private tour of the cooperative. I’ve been on many coffee tours, but I still learned a lot! Banana trees provide shade; bourbon varietals yield less fruit and it is spaced further apart on the branch (and can be golden in color, instead of red); coffee tress also come in many heights. They also grow cardamom here and have lots of pretty plants. After the tour you have a coffee tasting, trying the same coffee made via different methods. They also have a zip line tour, but I skipped that since it had been raining. Definitely a great place to check out in Coban! FYI- if you want to visit, take a taxi and don’t attempt the bus 😆

Yaxhá: after spending the morning exploring Tikal, my friend and I continued on to spend the afternoon and sunset at a lesser-known group of Mayan ruins called Yaxhá. It’s similar to Tikal, but less crowded (sunset was very busy though). What I think is so cool is that every “hill” you walk past is actually a pyramid that hasn’t been excavated yet. Incredible to think how thoroughly the jungle reclaimed its territory once the Mayans left. We also got to watch sunset from the top of a pyramid here- our guide told us that Yaxhá is better than Tikal for sunset because there is a lake which reflects the light 😎 Apparently the best itinerary is Tikal for sunrise and Yaxhá for sunset!
Heads up: Tikal in the morning and Yaxhá in the afternoon makes for a loooong day. If you do both, make sure you’re prepared to be active in the 90 degree heat for 6+ hours!

Loved every moment of my time in Colorado! I knocked almost every item of my “to-do” list for the state, and it was exactly what my adventuring spirit had been craving for the last 6 months. Being outside in pretty places is just the BEST.

And I loved how seriously mask-wearing was taken throughout the state, as well as distancing at restaurants. I thought it was well done overall (and I’m quite discerning in that department!) 😆 👩🏼‍⚕️😷 The great thing about a trip like this (which involves driving around in a car and playing outside), is that physical distancing comes without much effort!
